When I first started selling office products more than 40 years ago, Alliance Corporate Services wasn’t the name of my company, carpal tunnel syndrome wasn’t a diagnosis, the word ergonomics didn’t exist, no one had a smart phone and I could count on one hand how many of my clients had computers.

Today, the buzz word in every office I furnish and around the country is ergonomics. But what exactly is it? Ergonomics is the study of how to improve efficiency and comfort in the workplace. Companies specialize in it and make it a practice to design products, like chairs and desks, that help improve posture and reduce discomfort while on the job.

One of these companies, and one of my favorite manufacturers, is Humanscale. The company is a leader in the ergonomics industry and even has a team in place to test and manufacture the perfect workplace. Buying ergonomically designed furniture is important, but

if you don’t use these products the right way, then there’s no point in making the purchase in the first place. The best way to do that is with video examples. So please take a minute to click on the links below if you want to revolutionize the way you feel in your office.

THE PERFECT CHAIR – Sometimes customers want to skimp on the purchase of a chair. But if you sit in a chair all day, make the investment in a good chair that offers lumbar support, armrests that move and that is the perfect height. My two favorite chairs are the Liberty Chair and the Freedom Chair by Humanscale. But no matter if you purchase one of these chairs or sit in another one, click here to watch this video now for your first lesson in ergonomics and in choosing the right chair.

CHAIR HEIGHT – Besides the lumbar support and adjustable arm rests, chair height can be an important factor in ergonomics. The Freedom Chair comes in leather and offers a higher back. Click here to take a look at this video to see how important it is for your chair to be designed with what’s best for your body.

CHAIR USE – Are you one of those people who lean over your desk or sit on the edge of your chair to type? Do you suffer from neck or back pain? Not sitting in your chair correctly is the number one cause of aches and pains. Believe it or not, leaning back in your chair is the best position when sitting at your desk.

KEYBOARD TO CHAIR RELATIONSHIP – Even if you buy the best chair, the way it is positioned in relationship to your keyboard is key in ergonomics. Make sure your keyboard is not on your desk. It should be on a pullout tray under it. Your wrists should be up and the heels of your palm should sit on the tray. If you want to finally avoid the crick in your neck or the pain in your wrist, take another minute to watch this video by clicking here.

If you’ve never heard of ergonomics before today, I hope you take the time to click on the videos above to see for yourself the benefits of ergonomics. If you want to learn more, call or e-mail me, or just wait until next month, when I unveil Ergonomics 201 and we go a little more in depth about the subject.

Until then, go for it… sit and lean all the way back in your chair and revolutionize your office space through proper ergonomics!
