It doesn’t take a lot of research and data analysis to realize an employee’s mood and a company’s revenue are intricately intertwined. A company loses money when employees aren’t productive, and employees aren’t very productive when they’re unhappy.
There are several things an employee can do to organically alter his mood. For example, someone who sleeps well, eats right, and exercises will have the right physical and mental drive to vigorously tackle his to-do list. But there are ways an employer can help, as well. The layout of an office and its design elements play an important part in the overall mood of its inhabitants.
At Alliance Corporate Services, we couldn’t agree more. When designing a work space, we stress the importance of key elements of a productive space: lighting, color and layout.
Lighting

A person’s overall feeling of health and happiness can change with the flick of a switch. In fact, lack of natural light, or poor artificial lighting can trigger depression. So it goes without saying that good lighting is essential for the well being and productivity of the workplace.
Color
Color significantly influences a person’s emotion and efficiency. While white is a common hue for office walls, it’s wise to choose these other colors throughout the office …
- Green, which symbolizes nature, is restful and helps promote a relaxed mood.
- Orange, has been found to increase oxygen supply to the brain, producing an energizing and stimulating effect.
- Blue, can lower heart rates, leaving employees feeling centered, focused and calm.
Furniture
It goes without saying that poor quality furniture isn’t going to make anyone happy. Who’s going to be content sitting on a chair that hurts their back or leaning over a desk that’s too short? The heights of your desk and chair should be such that your thighs are parallel to the floor, and your upper arms are upright.
There are so many different factors that can impact a company’s bottom line. By creating an inviting atmosphere and making your employees happy, at least you can ensure their productivity is not an issue.
