In general, people can be categorized as either introverted or extroverted. And, every office is made up of both. It’s important to take people’s different personalities into consideration when designing a space. Though one size might fit all when it comes to t-shirts and yoga pants, it certainly doesn’t work for office spaces. And what works for the extrovert doesn’t always work for the introvert.

Companies like Google and Facebook continue to fan the flames of popularity of the open plan office design. The general consensus is that these types of workspaces promote collaboration and communication, and thus lead to greater productivity. But, that’s not always the case. They work fabulously for extroverts who feed off of others’ energy, but are less popular among introverts who find the interruption in an open work environment distracting.

Every employer wants to create an office environment that’s beneficial and productive for all employees. So how do you provide the type of atmosphere where everyone thrives? By providing alternatives. Give extroverts the collaborative space they need to interact, engage, and become motivated about the project at hand. Also, provide private work spaces that offer introverts a distraction-free space they need to get work done. Incorporate multiple meeting options:  small breakout spaces with comfortable seating where extroverts can meet and collaborate with people throughout the day, and traditional conference rooms where introverts can be more task focused.
