Last month I wrote about the evolution of the office. I’ve seen numerous changes since I started in the office furniture and design business almost 45 years ago. Like fashion, it’s nice to look back and remember some of the better ideas, and maybe even chuckle at some of the bigger faux pas. But, the most exciting part is to look at the emerging trends for the current year.

So, what should we expect this year? Borrowing from the likes of Google, more and more companies are converting their offices from a utilitarian space its employees tolerate to one where they feel creative, motivated, and energetic. Here’s how:
- Bringing the outside in. It’s been proven that plants and other natural elements increase productivity and overall well being. Many businesses are taking that information into account and introducing elements of nature, like outdoor decompressing areas, rooftop gardens, and water features.
- Refreshing your color scheme. By now, you’ve probably all heard that color profoundly affects our moods. But, did you know it’s actually the intensity of the color that evokes either a soothing or a stimulated response? It’s true. Design accordingly. A blend of bright colors strategically selected for task seating, personal storage pieces, or communication walls will keep your staff feeling creative and invigorated.
- Size matters. Collaborative workstations will continue to be a big trend this year. Employees are much less tied to their desks or offices, in large part because employers are accepting the fact that their staff doesn’t have to be at their desks with their heads down to actually be working.
Above all, this year’s trends are meant to facilitate collaboration, employee engagement, and productivity. Contact us so we may help you create a space that will inspire and empower your employees to do their best work.
